Martin Gypkens was born in Bonn in 1969. After gathering first experiences as a director trainee and assistant to the design team, he worked as property man in various feature-film productions and TV series. In 1996 he began his studies at the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen Konrad Wolf and, before he graduated in 2002, directed the short films "Die Falschen" (1996), "Brautkleid bleibt Brautkleid" (1998) and "We", for which he was awarded the Director's Promotion Prize at the Max Ophüls Festival and was nominated for a First Steps Award.
